  11. We have tested the LANtastic starter package with DESQview 
  12. versions 2.2, 2.3 and QEMM-386 versions 4.2-5.1.  The LAN starter 
  13. kit consists of two 2 Mbps LAN adapters, cable, & terminators and a 
  14. system disk with version 3.02 of LANtastic NOS. 
  15.  
  16. Installation was rather easy, and the instructions in the manual 
  17. are complete.  If you are installing this system on a 386 and are 
  18. using QEMM-386 or other memory manager, you must exclude the LAN 
  19. adapter ROM address space, D800-DFFF.  See page 196 of the 
  20. LANtastic NOS user guide for more information.
  21.  
  22. The new 10MB Ethernet adapters do not use any ROM or RAM 
  23. addresses so no exclusions are necessary. 
  24.  
  25.      LANBIOS.EXE is the program that activates the network 
  26.      adapter in your PC.  It uses 2K and can be loaded high.
  27.  
  28.      REDIR.EXE is the networking software.  Each PC node on the 
  29.      network must run this. It uses 11K and can be loaded high. 
  30.  
  31.      SERVER.EXE is an additional program that enables the PC 
  32.      running it to be accessed as a file server in addition to 
  33.      being a workstation.  It takes about 30-50 K and in most 
  34.      cases can also be loaded high.

  36. LANtastic uses DOS's SHARE.EXE to provide basic file protection and 
  37. locking.  Non-network versions of software can be run by only one 
  38. user at a time.  Some users have suggested:

  44.                RUNNING DESQview on LANtastic NOS
  45.  
  46. DESQview should be run from a local disk or from a unique 
  47. directory on the server. Initial installation of DV will take 350-
  48. 400K of disk space.  
  49.  
  50. You may want to try using the DESQview parameter, /DT (DOS 
  51. Terminate).  This tells DESQview to pass any calls to terminate a 
  52. program directly to DOS, instead of having DESQview itself 
  53. perform the termination.  Some DOS utilities (such as SHARE.EXE) and 
  54. networks may not be able to keep track of programs if DOS doesn't 
  55. see terminations.

  57. The network drivers (LANBIOS.EXE, REDIR.EXE) should be run before 
  58. invoking DESQview.  Loading them in a DV window is difficult at 
  59. best, and will severely degrade the performance of the network.

  61. NET and Lanpup can be run in DESQview to access network features 
  62. like Mail and Chat.  If you use Lanpup, you should run it in 
  63. Stand Alone mode (/S) inside of DESQview, not before it or else 
  64. multitasking will stop while LANPUP messages remain on the 
  65. screen.

  67. NET uses around 20K and LANPUP uses about 5K and both write 
  68. directly to the screen.  The "Writes directly to screen" option 
  69. should be set to Y for these programs to prevent bleed through.

  72.                  DESQview on a LANtastic Server
  73.  
  74. In order to use DV and LANtastic together you may save yourself 
  75. some work by not installing the server option of LANtastic.  
  76. There is a conflict that MAY or MAY NOT show itself if the SERVER 
  77. program has been loaded. 
  78.  
  79. Even though the servers in LANtastic are not dedicated, DESQview 
  80. should not be run on a PC designated as a server with LANtastic 
  81. NOS versions 3.02 and earlier.  Programs run in DESQview are 
  82. allowed to access DOS but the LANtastic Server wants exclusive 
  83. access to DOS at certian times and will attempt to prevent access 
  84. to DOS.  It is this condition that may cause problems.

  86. Symptoms include computer lock-up, access denied, or computer re-
  87. boots. It most readily shows up when running 2 or more 
  88. applications under DV that access data/programs across the net. 
  89. (Working locally seems to work ok.)

  91. If you must be set up as a SERVER, and are experiencing these 
  92. problems you can work around this by setting the SHARE CPU WHEN 
  93. IN FOREGROUND to N and RUNS IN BACKGROUND to N in Change Program 
  94. for applications that access DOS in a manner that causes crashes.  
  95.

  100. This will allow you to switch between programs, but will not run 
  101. these programs in background.  
  102.  
  103. Another option is to setup your LANtastic Network with a PC 
  104. dedicated as a server and only run DV on a non-server.
  105.  
  106. Quarterdeck is currently investigating to see if a modified 
  107. version of server.exe will be able to tell DV not to multi-task 
  108. during critical operations performed by the server.
